Is it just us, or is health and wellness consciousness like a trend now? Not that we’re complaining! We’re all for it. If you ask us, it’s about time society took its health and wellbeing seriously. Did you know that the United States falls at number 47 in the world’s life expectancy rankings? The leading cause of death in the United States – to no surprise—is heart disease, a (often) preventable disease through lifestyle choices, such as a “healthful diet [and] regular exercise.” Although heart disease is a scary condition, it is not one that cannot be managed or monitored from an earlier age. And because the Copper Fit Team cares about you and your wellbeing, we’ve not only created products to aid you in keeping an active lifestyle, but we’ve also designed a #wellnesschallenge to keep you motivated!
On Sunday 16 July 2023 we launched the Copper Fit Wellness Challenge—a 7-day challenge that highlights daily tasks you can do from (mostly) the comfort of your own home. These tasks were devised with the intent to keep you focused on living a healthier summer (and fall) this year—and every year. They say it takes 18 days to form a habit, and this challenge will get you almost halfway there! Two rounds of the Copper Fit Wellness Challenge, and you won’t recognize the person in the mirror --- okay, perhaps not to that extreme, but a few months down the line you’ll look back to reflect and will realize how much your life has changed.
Day 1: Stay off social media for the day.
Social media platforms are great for interaction, networking, and even as a pastime. However, they can also be a peril to your wellbeing, especially your mental health. By staying off social media, for instance, you can increase productivity. Twenty-four hours of no social media can eliminate distractions that do not serve you and create space for you to focus better on tasks, projects, or personal goals that have been sitting in the back burner. Logging off or muting social media applications will allow you to get through these tasks without interruptions of notifications and scrolling feeds.
Furthermore, constant exposure to social media can contribute to feelings of anxiety, stress, and the long-dreaded FOMO (fear of missing out). Disconnecting from social media for a day gives you the opportunity to disconnect from the virtual world and reconnect with your real-life experiences, while also helping reduce comparison with others, alleviating social pressures, and promoting a sense of contentment and mindfulness. Relatively, dissociating from social media can improve your relationships as well. In stepping away from social media for a few hours, you will have the chance to be fully present with your loved ones, friends, and/or colleagues and engage in meaningful conversations that can strengthen your bonds.
A break from social media can also lead to improved sleep quality, mental clarity, and reduced information overload. The blue light emitted from screens and the engagement with social media can interfere with your sleep cycle. Taking a break for a day can help get you back on track to a restful night and feeling rejuvenated the next morning! In the meantime, the absence of social media during the day can help you dig deeper into self-reflection. A break from constant input of opinions, information, and updates is exactly what your inner voice needs to be heard.
Whatever the reason, staying off social media for a day can only benefit you and your health. Go ahead, we challenge you to give it a try and see how you feel!
Day 2: Stay hydrated.
We know, we know, you’ve heard it before; but it truly is one of life’s secrets to a healthier you! Staying hydrated is crucial for maintaining overall health and well-being. Staying hydrated can help improve your physical performance, for instance. When your body is well-hydrated, it can efficiently regulate its temperature, keep joints lubricated, and deliver nutrients to cells. It can also help prevent fatigue (especially during hot summer days) and improve endurance. Our Copper Fit Energy Plus Hydrating Compression socks, as great as they are, can only take you so far --- the rest is up to your (well-hydrated) body.
The brain is an organ, and like every other organ in your body, it needs oxygen and – you guessed it – hydration Dehydration doesn’t only affect your physical state, it can also impair cognitive abilities including memory, attention, concentration, and decision-making.
For those trying to lose weight or maintain their summer bodies, hydration is crucial. Proper hydration supports digestion and metabolism by aiding in the breakdown and absorption of nutrients, facilitating bowel movement, and preventing constipation. Similarly, proper hydration also helps your kidneys function properly by helping flush out toxins and reduce the risk of urinary tract infections.
For those skin guru’s out there, or the novice to the skincare trend, without hydration, your skin will not get very far. Plentiful hydration can contribute to a healthy vibrant skin because the skin appears more radiant, moisturized, and plumped. Enough hydration can prevent dryness and promote elasticity, which is the secret to the reduction of appearances of wrinkles and fine lines.
And finally, proper hydration can benefit your energy levels, mood, and emotional wellbeing. Staying well hydrated can boost your energy and combat lethargy, enabling you to remain more alert and focused. Simultaneously, good hydration can lead to maintaining a positive mood and emotional stability rather than the irritability and anxiety that have been linked to dehydration.
Day 3: Start your day with meditation.
We know meditation can be intimidating. You’re probably thinking, “No way can I sit there for an hour with my eyes shut and think about nothing,” and we agree. However, that’s not what meditation is. Meditation is about finding your breath, relaxing into your present self, and just… well… being. Whether thoughts come to you or not is the least of priorities. If they come, let them, and let them go just as fast – that’s the trick to it, not fixating on a single thought, event, or emotion!
So, in case you need a little shove to try meditation, here are some benefits that might convince you. Meditation, especially daily meditation, can lead to stress reduction by activating the body’s relaxation response, lowering cortisol, and promoting a sense of calm and tranquility. Like proper hydration, meditation can also improve focus and concentration because it involves training the mind to focus and redirect attention.
In addition, meditation can enhance emotional well-being because it cultivates self-awareness and mindfulness. As a result, it can help you develop emotional resilience, reduce negative emotions, and promote a greater sense of happiness. Meditation, also like hydration and social media absence, can lead to good quality sleep as well by helping the body and mind relax, reduce racing thoughts, and promote better sleep quality. And, lastly, it can have physical health benefits too! Meditation has been linked to helping lower blood pressure, reduce risk of heart disease, and support healthy immune systems.
